A new credit card rate war has erupted between Nationwide and Barclaycard, with both extending their interest-free balance transfer offers to fight for top spot in the market.

Yesterday, Nationwide threw down the gauntlet and launched a 0pc balance transfer card for 17 months with the lowest transfer fee on the market.

The launch meant that Nationwide had matched Barclaycard’s 17 month 0pc balance transfer offer – kicking them off the top spot on the best buy tables. This caused Barclaycard to extend its offer to 18 months.

M&S has withdrawn from the balance transfer battle, by launching a best buy card for shoppers, charging no interest for 15 months on purchases.

Owens said: “The M&S offer is designed to get shoppers spending in the stores, which is obviously its priority.”

Tesco has zero interest for 13 months and Sainsbury for 12 months. Nationwide’s other new card gives six months interest-free shopping.
